New Year, New Policy Diary

Change Makes Sense
In the coming weeks Policy Diary will be changing immensely. Small changes are already afoot. Instead of providing links to where publications have originally appeared, I will use Doc Stoc instead. It's cleaner and permanent (no more broken links). Now pdf versions of op-eds will appear within the blog itself - which means readers can spend more time here instead of being redirected elsewhere.

Bringing Health to the People
Also, while watching the health reform debate wind its way through both halls of congress it occurs to me that the public hasn't heard from doctors enough. Sure, every now and then someone from the AMA or an independent federal panel will pipe up but then they'll disappear never to be heard from or seen again. The public should hear directly from doctors and practitioners, and on a regular basis. To support this I will be interviewing doctors, providers, and other practitioners every week (or so) in the hopes that their voices are heard. The first interview will appear on Christmas Day.

Making More Room on Policy Diary
For the past few months I have been almost exclusively focused on health policy. That will no longer be the case. My passion for it has not diminished; on the contrary, it has only increased and has led me to believe that health disparities and inequities represent only one-half of the barriers vulnerable populations face. The other half is education. So on these pages I will dig deeper into education policy with a focus on the areas of early childhood and equitable finance. Interviews with educators, policymakers, and ed school students are on the horizon as well.

December
It's been a busy month. I was awarded an Excellence in Virginia Government Award Tuition Scholarship (EVGA) on December 3. The EVGA recognizes community service, contributions to VCU, and an desire to work in public service. More about the award may be seen here. The ceremony was superb and I met a lot of great people. Special recognition goes out to my parents, Dean Rodriguez, Professor Jennifer Thompson, Dr. Klink, and the EVGA Steering Committee. The pictures may be seen below.

In addition to that good news there was more - I was accepted to Touro Law Center with a $56,400 scholarship. I am very pleased. My admissions cycle is really just getting started at this point but it's a great start. My sister Maria Wilson, who started her own firm not too long ago, is a graduate of Touro and loved her time there.

I will be blogging more frequently. Usually op-eds are displayed and that's about it. No longer will that be the case. There's just too much happening to for me to update so infrequently.

Lastly, there will soon be a new site design. I'm working out some final details, hopefully it will be introduced by February.
